EXT. APARTMENT COMPLEX - DAY
Simon marches up to Amanda’s front door and bangs his knuckles against it several times.
He gazes into the peephole, his face stoic and stern.
After several seconds, the door swings open.
Amanda stares at him, her face full of shock.
AMANDA
Simon?!
Tears form in her eyes.
AMANDA
Oh my God!
She lunges forward and throws her arms around him. She pulls him close and squeezes him tightly.
Simon pushes her away. He looks her in the eye.
SIMON
Why did you just download all the research files and information?
Amanda’s face fills with hurt and confusion.
AMANDA
What?
SIMON
You just downloaded everything from Herbie. I want to know why.
AMANDA
Because...oh my God, Simon! They told me you were dead.
Simon frowns.
SIMON
What?
AMANDA
The cops. They said you were dead. They said they found...
Amanda brings her hand up to her mouth.
AMANDA
Oh my God. They...
She looks down.
AMANDA
They said you’d been murdered. They needed to know what the machine was for.
SIMON
What?
AMANDA
They said I might be in danger too.
SIMON
So, you told them?
She looks up, tears run down her face.
AMANDA
Simon, I...I’m so sorry.
He looks away.
SIMON
Shit.
He rubs his hand over his mouth.
AMANDA
I downloaded everything, because I was worried that they might seize it all. I’m sorry if that was wrong.
SIMON
No. No. That’s good. You did the right thing.
Amanda looks down.
AMANDA
God, I’m so stupid. I should have known not to believe them.
SIMON
What did they tell you?
AMANDA
They said you’d been shot. And they said whoever did it, might try to do the same to me.
Simon freezes and stares at the ground.
Amanda looks back up at him.
AMANDA
Simon?
Simon’s eyes dart toward her. He takes her by the arms.
SIMON
I need to borrow your car.
AMANDA
What?
SIMON
Here...
He yanks a key fob out of his pocket and squeezes it into her hand.
SIMON
Take mine. Just give me your keys.
Amanda nods in confusion.
AMANDA
Uh, okay.
She steps back into her apartment.
Simon turns and scans the area around him.
Amanda returns and offers her keys.
AMANDA
Here.
Simon grabs them.
SIMON
Okay, uh...
He looks into Amanda’s eyes.
SIMON
Don’t say anything to anyone. I’ll call you later.
AMANDA
Okay.
Simon stands and stares at her.
AMANDA
Is everything okay?
Simon gives her a quick little smile.
SIMON
Yeah, sure. We’ll talk later.
He turns and hurries away.
Amanda hugs her arms around herself as she watches him go.
